Understanding Bali's Seasons

Bali has two distinct seasons: the dry season (May to October) and the wet season (November to April). But calling it "wet" and "dry" misses most of the nuance. The wet season still has long stretches of brilliant sunshine. The dry season can have the occasional grey day.

What actually changes between the seasons isn't the amount of rain — it's the character of the island. Tourist density, ceremony calendars, surf conditions, and rice field aesthetics all shift dramatically depending on the month.

The Dry Season: May to October

This is peak Bali. The sky is consistently blue, the humidity drops to tolerable levels, and the island is at its most vibrant and alive. It's also the most crowded and most expensive period — particularly July, August, and the Christmas/New Year window.

May & June — Our Favourite Months

The dry season has just begun, which means the landscape is still lush and green from the wet season rains, but the skies have cleared. Crowds are significantly lighter than peak season. Prices are at shoulder-season rates. The rice terraces are at their most verdant. If you're booking Karaya, this is the sweet spot.

July & August — Peak Season

European summer holidays and Australian school holidays converge, filling the island from Seminyak to Ubud. The energy is infectious — but so are the queues, the traffic, and the prices. If peak season is your only option, book everything months in advance. The upside: every restaurant, bar, and beach club is at full energy.

September & October — The Quiet Tail

The crowds thin, the heat remains, and the prices drop. September and October offer the reliability of the dry season without the intensity of peak. Great for couples and those who want the best weather with the fewest people. Surf conditions are excellent on the west coast.

The Shoulder Seasons: April & November

These two months are Bali's best-kept secret. The crowds of peak season have either not yet arrived or just departed, but the weather is still largely excellent. You'll find better rates, emptier roads, and a Bali that feels a little more like its unhurried self.

The Wet Season: November to April

Don't let the label put you off. The wet season in Bali is nothing like a monsoon — it's more like having a scheduled afternoon thunderstorm that clears by early evening. Mornings are almost always sunny. The landscape is at its most dramatically beautiful. And the island is at its most affordable.

The rice terraces are flooded and mirrored. The waterfalls are at full power. The ceremonies are more frequent. If culture and landscape are your priorities, the wet season might actually be your ideal window.
